out on the farm

A few weeks ago, studio-e spent an afternoon volunteering at Gaining Ground, an organic farm in Concord that donates its produce to area food pantries and meal programs. Though we haven’t helped with raising the crops, we have been involved with the farm since 1997—raising awareness and financial support through designing its marketing and fundraising pieces. go local

While it’s still extremely important to go green, going local is all the rage right now (though the two often go hand-in-hand). And why shouldn’t it be?

Going local means better, healthier food, a wider range of choices, better service, more jobs and a host of other benefits—we’ve listed 10 of them for your review. More specifically, the studio is interested in how our clients—colleges, universities and independent schools—are reaching out to their communities. gaining ground

As a strategic design firm committed to education, studio-e believes that it’s important to give back to the community, provide programs that assist in protecting the environment and support the work of non-profits.

We manage to touch upon all three areas in our work with Gaining Ground, an organic farm that donates all of its produce to area food pantries and meal programs. Located in Concord, MA, not far from the studio, Gaining Ground raises and distributes roughly 20,000 pounds of produce each growing season.

Since 1997, studio-e has contributed our time and our designs to Gaining Ground. We began by refining its logo and brand identity, and have since worked on the farm’s fundraising and special events pieces, as well as its biannual newsletter. We also designed Gaining Ground: A Model of Hunger Relief and Meaningful Volunteerism, and are currently designing the Gaining Ground cookbook.

While our support of Gaining Ground is indicative of the kind of unique work that we do, it also speaks to the strength of our relationships within the community—and the kinds of relationships we hope to cultivate with future clients.

earth day

Because studio-e is committed to both the community and the environment—doing our small part to protect the planet—we would be remiss if we didn’t say something about Earth Day, which happens to be today.

Fast facts about Earth Day:

  • Earth Day is observed in 175 countries and is the largest secular modern day holiday in the world.

  • More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration in 1970.

  • Earth Day Networks estimates that 500 million people from 4,500 organizations in 180 countries will participate in Earth Day events during the month of April.

think before you ink

Though studio-e has made light of the current long-term financial tsunami in an attempt to ease some of the stress, we know that our clients are hurting right now. Times are tough, budgets have been tightened, and the way we market—to clients, students, parents, donors—has to change.

The University of Florida offers a great model for “cost-savings in all things print,” with a website devoted solely to the topic. The site offers useful facts and tips, including: [read more]
